Community Support Services / SIL

Community Support Services (CSS) offers support to adults with developmental disabilities in their chosen lifestyles. Support can be given to people living independently or living in other community settings such as emergency housing, supervised boarding homes, long-term care facilities, rooming houses and homes of family members.

Support is offered in three main areas: daily living skills, health and community involvement. Some examples of support are helping people learn how to:

  • shop for groceries.
  • prepare meals.
  • manage their money.
  • get along with other people.
  • make decisions.
  • look after their physical/mental health.
  • find a place to live and find community activities.

The Supported Independent Living Program within Open Hands provides services and supports to people living in the community of Cornwall.   The supports and assistance provided within the program is as wide and varied as the people supported.   The SIL program assists people in their day to day living as well as planning for future goals, be a part of the community and helping people to be the change they want to see in their own lives.   Staff in the program work in very dynamic, fluid and autonomous environment that demands a lot of interpersonal skills and a drive to advocate for others.  They help to link people to the community and supports and services.
